SO MUCH MORE TO SEE BEYOND PHUKET ISLAND
UPDATE: MAKE SURE YOU SCROLL DOWN TO THE LAST UPDATED ENTRY AT THE END OF THIS POST ...... IT WILL BE WORTH IT!!!!!
Visiting Phuket Island there is more than enough to see and do to keep yourself busy for more than 12 days. BUT just off the island lies numerous other smaller islands than boast with the most scenic beauty that a tropical island can give. The Thai word for island is KOH - pronounced Gaaw.
Visiting Phuket Island there is more than enough to see and do to keep yourself busy for more than 12 days. BUT just off the island lies numerous other smaller islands than boast with the most scenic beauty that a tropical island can give. The Thai word for island is KOH - pronounced Gaaw.
Close to Phuket Island there are about 39 smaller islands and islets covering a total of 70 square kilometers. There are so many islands that it literally will take several months to explore each one. Some has the most unspoiled tropical beaches and some islands are uninhabited. Superb snorkelling and diving sites will be found here.
There are numerous day tours on offer to these places. Some islands like Phi Phi Island again is like a mini Phuket with numerous hotels on it.
Exploring the offshore islands around Phuket is a must do for anyone planning a holiday to Thailand's largest and most popular island destination.
Phuket is loaded with exciting places to visit and things to do, but there are lots of beautiful islands just offshore that offer unique sights of their own.
Phuket is the ideal base for visitors who want to explore the offshore islands, with many nearby islands only a few minutes by speedboat or a couple of hours sailing to the beautiful islands further offshore. There are so many tropical islands that surround Phuket; it would take weeks to explore them all, there are in total 39 islands around Phuket with most of them lying off the east coast.
Many of the islands around Phuket are deserted, and offer some of the best dive sites and snorkelling areas. Some of the other islands around Phuket are very popular, providing lots of family fun activities for kids and adults alike.
Here under are some of the well known tourist destinations. Be aware that there are hundreds of islands within the proximity of Phuket and some of these are so remote that it can only be reached by private boats. These needs to be explored whilst on Phuket. Visit the numerous (hundreds) of small tour vendors situated on all the streets. Most will only have the mainstream islands but you do get the odd ones out promoting the smaller, lesser known islands.
HOW TO GET TO THESE ISLANDS
To reach the islands around Phuket you can book day trips through any tour shop, booking office or from your hotel in Phuket.
Organised tours are good as they include your transfer from your hotel to the pier, and then collect you from the pier and take you back to your hotel.
Depending on what tour you book, some also include morning tea and lunch. A good thing is to GOOGLE Phuket tours to neighbouring islands. Just be aware, most of the sites offer PROMOTIONAL PRICES if booked online. DO NOT DO THIS. You WILL get the tours much cheaper if you book them at the hundreds of vendors in Phuket itself. Remember Thailand is about haggling ... so you can bargain for a good price. I only book my tours a day or two in advance at these vendors because then you have a good feel of what the weather will be like. Not once had I been scammed when booking these day trips. If you do not get a good tour price, simply walk 50 meters on to the next one..
LITERALLY HUNDREDS OF TOUR VENDORS EVERYWHERE |
Booking these tours are CASH ONLY. So make sure you have cash on you. YES, IT IS SAFE TO ENTRUST THEM WITH YOUR HARD EARNED CASH. You will get a receipt.
These trips always include the following:
Pick up and drop off transport from and to your hotel. Welcoming drinks at Chalong Harbour (where most of the excursions take place from). Speed Boat, long tail boat or cruiser boat, lunch and soft drinks. The first time you will be so nervous in paying a tour's money to a vendor hoping they will indeed pick you up at your hotel. But rest assured THEY ALWAYS DO (in 7 years I was not stood up once!)
Just make sure you have your hotel's name and address as well as their telephone number with you. This must be provided to the tour company to be able to work out a route for their shuttle service to pick you up. You will be picked up in a mini bus taxi and will share the taxi with other tourists on the same trip.
You will be met in your hotel lobby. SO BE READY ON THE TIME THEY SAID YOU WILL BE PICKED UP. REMEMBER IF YOU ARE LATE THEY WILL LEAVE. THE TRIP CANNOT WAIT FOR YOU!!
The disadvantage with tours is you are on a timetable and may be in a large group. If you do not want to take a tour then it is possible to visit the closer islands yourself. If there is a group of you then it may work out cheaper than taking a tour. Simply drive to the coast nearest to the island you want to visit and rent a long-tail or speedboat at the beach. The driver will take you to the island you want to see and wait while you are there. The price will depend on the season, how long you go and how far you want to go.

OK SO WHAT TYPE OF BOAT TRANSPORT TO USE
You have a choice (with difference in price) between a trip with a speed boat, a long tail boat or a sea cruiser. I have done all three of them and each has its own pros and cons.
Speed boats are faster and you get to your destination quicker. Long tail boats are more personal and it will be laid back. You will be able to visit smaller Hongs (bread like island structures) that speed boats and cruisers cant get to.
Cruise boats are bigger but slower. You can sit on the deck and admire the surroundings while in a speedboat you will be confined to the inside of the boat.
TYPICAL HONGS IN THE ANDAMAN SEA |

There is really not a good or bad choice in any of these. Try and do all three to different places.

SPEED BOATS - FASTER AND EXCITING |
LONG-TAIL BOATS - SLOWEST BUT THE MOST AWESOME ADVENTURE |
BEST DAY TRIPS FOR FIRST TIMERS
PHI PHI ISLANDS (pronounced pee pee)
Probably the most known island apart from Phuket. Remember the movie THE BEACH with Leo DiCaprio?? To me Phi Phi Island has beautiful scenery and the beaches are spectacular. Unfortunately you only tend to see the real beauty after 4 pm when the most day visitors have left the island. Phi Phi Island is a mini Phuket and you can spend you entire holiday on this island.
MAYA BAY - PHI PHI ISLANDS |
UNFORTUNATELY BEING POLLUTED BY HUNDREDS OF DAY VISIT SPEED BOATS |
Due to its popularity the island is flocked with hundreds and hundreds of day visitors. If you do the speedboat trip to Phi Phi you will be taken to Maya Bay, a breathtaking bay with the most beautiful water. Try take a tour as early as possible because speed boats line up on that beach that it is actually heartbroken. Sadly such natural splendour are killed by overpopulated speed boats and visitors.
A NORMAL DAY VISIT TRIP TO PHI PHI ISLANDS WITH STOPS |
JAMES BOND ISLAND (Koh Tapu)
James Bond Island is a famous landmark in Phang Nga Bay. It first found its way onto the international tourist map through its starring role in the James Bond movie 'The Man with the Golden Gun'. A distinctive feature of this famous bay is the number of sheer limestone cliffs that vertically jut out of the emerald-green water.
The bizarre, why-doesn’t-it-fall-over outline of James Bond Island or Koh Tapu (meaning Nail Island in Thai), lies next to the equally well known Koh Ping Ghan (sometime spell ‘Ping Gan’ or ‘Ping Gun’). The entire area surrounding this island is indeed spectacular, but it can get crowded with tourist boats in high season.

The entire area surrounding this island is indeed spectacular, but it can get crowded with tourist boats in high season.
This island is usually a stop-off place on a tour. Not really and island to spend a whole day on. You are here to see the famous landmark! There are also the never ending touristy stalls selling things at much inflated prices. A good stop for the first time tourist to take the "tourist pic with the landmark".
James Bond Island, with its signature rocky pinnacle, has been a major attraction ever since it featured in the 1974 Bond movie. Luckily it is under national park protection and as a result no boats of any kind are allowed to go too close to the island because of its precarious position – big on the upper part and relatively slim at the bottom.
The two best ways to view James Bond Island are from boats or from the small beach on Koh Ping Ghan. Koh Ping Ghan is another sample of how the Mother Nature works her magic. Basically it’s a very high leaning rock that has some small caves inside. It’s pretty amazing and fun to check them all out. On its crowded eastern beach, there are stalls and stands selling knickknack souvenirs, mostly made from shells and woods.

CORAL ISLAND
Another popular day destination is Coral Island. About 9 kilometers from Phuket. Speed boat trips are offered to this island as a half day or full day trip. Coral Island (Koh Hae in Thai) is a small island lying five kilometers off Phuket’s southeastern coast. The short commuting time – 15 minutes by speedboat – from Phuket, makes this island a very popular day trip destination. It features only two beaches named Long and Banana, both of them facing north and offering great diving and snorkelling opportunities.
Coral Island is a snorkelers paradise. A lot of beach activities includes para sailing, sea walking, banana boat, snorkeling, diving etc.
SEA WALKING TO BE PART OF MARINE LIFE - PRICELESS |
RACHA ISLANDS
The Racha islands (or Raya Islands), some 12 km south of Phuket, are best known as excellent diving and snorkelling day-trip destinations. Racha Yai, however, is quickly developing into a place to stay on for a while with a number of bungalow and resort operations springing up in recent years. Racha Yai reveals itself in splendid fashion, with most arrivals landing onto a strip of fine white sand tucked deep into the long, U-shaped main bay, called Ao Tawan Tok. The water here is clear and perfect for snorkelling, though the bay gets quite busy with visiting boats in the afternoons.
Long-tail and speedboat transfer tours takes you to these two islands and the trip takes from 45 minutes to more than an hour depending on the boat. Again the long tail boat take you to the more remote unspoiled part where the speed boats cant go.
Koh Racha has white sandy beaches and clear blue water. There is also lots of places to snorkel/scuba dive with lots of tropical fish. This island is considered better than Coral Island and less congested.
SIMILAN ISLANDS
Similan Islands are located just 84 km northwest of Phuket. Koh Similan is one of the best-known island groups in the Andaman Sea, largely because of the wonders that wait beneath the clear blue waters that surround it. Generally counted among the 10 most interesting dive areas in the world, this little archipelago has also become a favourite destination for yachts and tour boats.
"Similan" is derived from the Malay sembilan, and means "nine". Each of the Similan Islands has a number as well as a name. These are, running from north to south: Koh Ba Ngu (No. 9), Similan (No. 8), Payu (No. 7), Miang (No. 4, No. 5 and, in some opinion, No. 6), Payan (No. 3), Payang (No. 2), and Hu Yong (No. 1). Hin Pousar, or "Elephant Head Rock", is alternatively designated No. 6 by some. Koh Bon, lying 17 nautical miles north of Ba Ngu, is part of the Similan National Park and may be granted honorary status as No. 10.

Please note that the Similan islands are officially open to the public from 15 October until 15 May, but dates may vary each year. Due to the monsoon season the currents make it impossible for boats to go near the islands after middle May.
KOH YAO ISLANDS
Koh Yao Noi and Koh Yao Yai are a pair of large islands in the middle of Phang Nga Bay, equidistant to Phuket and the Krabi mainland. While the pace of development is accelerating on Koh Yao Noi in particular, the islands remain a quiet refuge that feels far removed from the crowds of Phuket.
Long-tail boat ferries make daily trips to Yao Noi from Bang Rong Pier on the east coast of Phuket. The fare is 50 Baht for the one-hour journey, with daily departures from Phuket at 9.30 am, 12 noon and 5 pm. The boat will make a short stop on Koh Yao Yai, then cross to Koh Yao Noi, only 8 minutes away. Long-tail boats can also be hired at Ao Po pier for charter to Koh Yao.
KOH KAI ISLANDS
Koh Khai Nok is a picturesque island off the East Coast of Phuket. The Island is quite small, fringed with a pristine white sandy beach and is surrounded by a spectacular, shallow reef which is ideal for snorkelling.
Small reef fish often come into the ankle deep water, so even non-swimmers can enjoy the marine life. It is only used for day trips, with no overnight accommodation available; however there is a restaurant on the island.
Koh Khai Nok is a popular island around Phuket, and is great for day trips as it only takes around 15 minutes by speedboat; it is a great place for relaxing on the beach, swimming and snorkelling. Khai Nok is suitable for all ages especially kids, here they can safely swim in the shallow waters and feed the fish.
KOH BON (Bon island)
Koh Bon (Bon Island) is a small island lying some two kilometers off the beach of Rawai on the southeastern coast of Phuket. This island is not to be confused with the Bon Island north of Phuket that is part of the Similan Islands. Covered with lush vegetation, this rocky islet, dotted with tiny sand coves, offers two main landing spots to its visitors.
The easiest way to get to Koh Bon is to hire a long-tail boat at Rawai’s jetty or along Rawai Beach, costing about 1,000 to 1,200 baht for the two-way trip that doesn’t take more than 15 minutes each way. The long-tail boat’s captain will drop you at Bon Island Restaurant and will let you know the time at which he will come to pick you up.

KOH RANG YAI
Koh Rang Yai is a small picturesque island about 5km off the east coast of Phuket.
It is covered with tropical virgin rain forests and boasts the longest and most beautiful beach. Koh Rang Yai is a wonderful destination for day trips with a variety of fun activities to enjoy such as kayaking, windsurfing, mountain biking, mini-golf, hiking and volleyball.
The island is also famous for producing top quality pearls for export around the world, and is the location of the Phuket Pearl Farm.
KHO LONE
Koh Lone is located in the middle of Chalong Bay, it is also known as Koh Lohn or just Lon Island.
Koh Lone is one of the larger islands around Phuket; it is fairly secluded from the massive tourism and nightlife that you find in some areas of Phuket. If you are after some serious relaxing a visit to the island is an ideal way to spend a few hours.
A long tail boat from Chalong Pier will take around 15 minutes.
KOH MAITON
Koh Maiton, is a little island located just 9 kilometres from Phuket. Maiton Island features beautiful white sandy beaches where you can laze around in the sun or swim in the crystal clear waters.
Areas around the island provide great spots for snorkelling and diving, as the waters have an abundance of marine life and unique corals.
The Honeymoon Island Hotel is the sole occupant of this perfect island paradise. Visitors not wanting to stay on the island may take a day trip from Ao Makham Deep Sea Port in Phuket.
OTHER ATTRACTIONS
Different day tour packages includes numerous options. A day trip you have to do is the one where you actually do canoeing through the numerous hongs. Don't worry, you sit back while the travel guides do the rowing. This is really worth the trip because you are actually taking into the sea caves and explore the most beautiful settings.'THIS WAS ONE OF MY ULTIMATE HIGHLIGHTS OF GOING BEYOND PHUKET
Normally the James Bond Island tour includes the sea kayaking as part of the trip.

NEWEST UPDATE 12 MARCH 2019
I stumbled across this gem of a must do excursion. Now this might be a bit pricy but oh so worth it. HOW WOULD YOU LIKE TO SPEND SOME TIME ON A PRIVATE ISLAND WHERE THERE IS JUST ONE HOUSE???
I am telling you it is idillic. A small island off the east coast of Phuket with a beautiful 4 bedroom house (3 bathrooms and aircon) boasting all amenities sleeping 8 people. The cost we paid was 15 000 Baht per day. Worth every hard earned cent. This includes breakfast as well as a private speedboat transfer from and back to Phuket AO PO Pier. Now if you are 8 people sharing this it is not a huge price to pay for a private island.
If that is too much there is also 4 tents sleeping 2 each on the other side of the island. This is more rustic with only a fan in the tent.
Click here and here to see this amasing place and how to book. Dont book on these site. Contact Pimprae on Facebook Messenger. She gave me an awesome deal and we chatted via FB Messenger and Whattsapp. I still paid via paypal on Air B&B. Safe and secure. What a fantastic host. Her Facebook page can be seen here where the tented camp can be viewed. From this FB page you can send her a message.
There is a small restaurant/kitchen that provides food for lunch and dinners. The menu looks awesome and the price extremely competitive. I will be there in 40 days and will update my personal experiences. Thus far my arranements with Pimprae (the host for the private house) has been just excellent.
Let me first show you see how awesome it is .....
QUITE A GOOD MENU AND EXCELLENT PRICES (IN BAHT) |

PICTURE YOURSELF ON THIS SWING .... JUST YOU ON A DESERTED ISLAND (WELL ALMOST, EXCEPT FOR THE HANDFUL OF STAFF |
